Tio Massing is a singer/songwriter from Ambrym island in Vanuatu. He was brought up in a culture of traditional practice through local customs and stories. His interest in music grew naturally from his early encounters with the traditional ‘tam tam’ (a wooden slit-drum) and songs in his vernacular language, Daakaka.
Now based in Port Vila, Tio performs in local reggae and roots groups, Koncerners and Dropvcull, and has collaborated with many artists from Pacific, African and European countries including members of Airileke, Blue King Brown, Kalja Riddim Klan, Simangavole, Kaumaakonga, Impossible Odds, Hermann Hartel, Rize of the Morning Star, Tabura and Black Rose. He plays a number of different instruments: violin, ukulele, guitar, tam tam, djembe and bush bass.
Tio’s main musical interest is exchanging traditional and contemporary beats and styles with other musicians. In Vanuatu, he is passionate about encouraging Ni-Vanuatu youth to use local instruments and create music based on their unique cultural rhythms and mother tongues.
